29 CityU scholars listed among the world's most cited researchers

29 CityU scholars are named Highly Cited Researchers for 2022, placing CityU 50th worldwide in this citation ranking.

An awards ceremony held at CityU by Clarivate in March commended 29 CityU scholars for being named Highly Cited Researchers for 2022stats that placed CityU 50th worldwide in this citation ranking. By faculty size, CityU's percentage of the world’s most Highly Cited Researchers puts it first in Hong Kong and Asia.

The list recognises scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated substantial influence. A total of 6,938 researchers from 69 countries and regions were named Highly Cited Researchers for 2022. All of them have published multiple highly cited papers in their fields and rank in the top 1% by citations. Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers are 1 in 1,000.
Most other ranking mechanisms, in contrast, give a high weighting to subjective opinion, which is why CityU's academic strengths are often underrated.
A number of international indicators now show that CityU's faculty members have extremely high academic standards and CityU has steadily developed into a truly world-class university.

“The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers who are having a significant impact on the research community as evidenced by the rate at which their work is being cited by their peers. CityU researchers have contributed to fueling the innovation, sustainability, health and security that is key for our society’s future,” said Mr Steven Wang, Vice-President of Academia and Government at Clarivate.

One of the faculty members on the list is Professor Andrey Rogach, Yeung Kin Man Chair Professor of Photonics Materials and Chair Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

“I am obviously very happy to be included on the list for the 5th consecutive year in 2022, which helps me to attract even more talented PhD students and postdocs to my group at CityU,” said Professor Rogach in his speech.
Professor Sam Kwong Tak-wu, Chair Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Communications and Public Relations Office, was another top scholar invited to give a speech on behalf of the CityU teaching and research team.

He said he was honoured to be on the list with other CityU scholars. “We are committed to creating a culture that promises to nurture and develop young scholars to form a virtuous cycle of talent for tomorrow,” he added.
CityU continues to cement its place among the top global universities by upholding the principles of “the integration of teaching and research” and “the separation of politics and education”.

By focusing on academia, CityU is now well known for promoting forward-looking higher education and is fully acknowledged as one of the fastest-growing universities in the world over the past 10 years. CityU hopes all sectors of the community fully understand and thoroughly consider the strengths of the University when distributing research funding and research postgraduate places.
